Day 3 Youth Firefighter Day Camp

June 19, 2024

Hard to believe camp is half over already as Wednesdays session comes to an end.

Today our cadets were shown the dangers of cooking incidents that happen every day and also what to do. They were instructed on the use of fire extinguishers and they also had the opportunity to extinguish a stove on fire with a fire extinguisher. Also on the topic of cooking fires the cadets were instructed on knowing your surroundings when at home, school, a hotel or pretty much anywhere. They identified where the exits, windows, stairs, elevators and emergency exits are located as well as the importance of escape plans and so on.

The Norristown FD brought 2 arson detection dogs – Kindel & Wagner. The cadets were shown how the dogs assist in the investigation process after a fire to help determine if arson is a possibility and if so – where the evidence leads them. They got to interact with the dogs and see a demonstration.

Other activities today included the use of ground ladders as well as forcible entry into a building. Cadets learned the tools used to perform these tasks as well as when it is determined that forcing entry into a building is necessary.

Our Tanker group visited the Limerick Community Park where they worked closely with the Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue Team. The cadets learned the logistics of preparing to deploy on a search as well as took part in a mock search around the park.

Finally a special thanks to the members in attendance from the Upper Frederick Fire Company who assisted us today!
