Smoke Detector Battery Change |
November 9, 2024 | |
On November 9, our firefighters went to the Villas at Linfield help the residents change their smoke detector batteries. As always, the members of the Limerick Department remind you that when you change your clocks it is also the perfect time to check all of the smoke detectors in your home. Smoke detectors are an important part of your home fire escape plan as working smoke detectors give you early warning so you can get outside quickly and safely. Roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke detectors or no working smoke detectors. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 71% of smoke detectors which failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries. Some older style smoke detectors have replaceable batteries - those batteries should be changed when you change your clocks in the spring and fall. If you have a newer home your detectors may be hardwired into your home with a battery backup - it’s still important to keep the batteries in them up to date, especially if there is a power outage. In the event that you lose power, that battery is there to take the place of the electric until your power is restored. The newer detectors are sealed with built in batteries that can last 10 years, at which point the whole detector should just be replaced.
