June 19: We had another great morning with our Fire Camp kids!
The Cadet group participated in hands-on training to become certified in CPR/AED and first aid in the Limerick Station training room. Cadets learned how to perform child and adult CPR, use AEDs, choke, bandage, stop the bleed, and use tourniquets. The rest of the crews rotated through Rescue stations outside. The kids went through each station, watching the firefighters use spreaders, cutters, struts, and making a purchase point. The kids got to practice cribbing under cars, using a pulley system, and using airbags for lifting vehicles.
Then, the kids watched the firefighters demonstrate a vehicle rescue in 10 minutes. Freedom Valley EMS also participated by assessing the "patient's" condition and extent of injuries. Due to the extensive injuries of the patient, EMS requested a helicopter. JeffStat flew in to fly the patient out. The Tanker crew assisted with transporting the patient from EMS care at the "scene" to the helicopter crews. After completing the transfer of care, all the kids came over to take a tour of the helicopter. After taking a picture with the helicopter crew and asking questions, the kids ended the day with a splash by getting a shower provided by Ladder 51! |
